Agree or Disagree?

One of the most common phrases used when people cannot come to an agreement is “we will just have to agree to disagree.” What exactly does this accomplish in the realm of spiritual leadership?

If agreeing to disagree allows both expressions to be correct, then we are headed for a train wreck in the spiritual realm.

Imagine the difference in the church today if leaders applied the same principles of interpretation and agreed to work together until unity could be achieved.

Imagine if the pride of self-righteousness were put aside with the intent of seeking to truly listen to God’s word and simply follow it…only.

Agreeable Leadership

Our culture thrives on the right or opportunity to disagree and argue. The result leads to dissension, division, discouragement, and disorder.

Joseph Addison said, “If men would consider not so much wherein they differ, as wherein they agree, there would be far less of uncharitableness and angry feeling in the world.”

This does not mean we agree with everyone, or that it is wrong to disagree. There may even be times we are required to discuss our differences with another person.

The far-reaching influence of leadership is determined by the manner in which differences are handled.

To make the greatest impact, let us begin by focusing on where we agree.

Truth and Unity…

People commonly believe we can “agree to disagree” and still have unity.

Absolute truth is denied and whatever is true to you may not be for me.

From the standpoint of opinions, there is no problem being united in the midst of disagreement. However, unity at the cost of compromising God’s word is a problem.

Doctrine trumps opinion, and if we disagree, either one of us is right and the other wrong, or we are both wrong. We cannot both be right and disagree on the healthy teaching of the faith.

Leaders must be diligent to stand firm on truth, proclaim it boldly, and follow it explicitly. Then we can be united as God designed for the church.
