Approachable

We all know that feeling of timidity when approaching someone in leadership. Leaders, however, must be approachable, but how?

Here are a few tips:

Close the laptop. Any time someone stops by, even for a few minutes, we need to close the lid on the laptop and give 100% of our attention.

Make good eye contact. Looking others in the eye demonstrates interest and engagement. If we constantly look down or seem distracted we communicate the opposite.

Watch the body language. We communicate a great deal through nonverbal language. Body language expresses that we are either approachable or unapproachable.

When leaders are approachable, we learn how to lead better.

As a catalyst, leaders incite forward and positive movement. For a leader to benefit in developing the characteristics of a catalyst, there must be a genuine interest in others.

A genuine interest in others requires a few key components.

1) Ability to listen. We must listen to the words, body language, and tone of voice.

2) Eye contact. Avoid looking at your watch. While challenging, it is vital to showing interest.

3) Appropriate questions. Ask polite questions, interest questions, and caring questions.

Leaders must have a genuine interest in others, which is often easier said than done, because we tend to have more interest in some than others. We are aware of emotional vampires, individuals who suck time and energy out of our existence.

A genuine interest in others requires a few key components.

Ability to listen. We must listen with our ears, but also our eyes and heart.
Eye contact. Without eye contact, we communicate a lack of interest.
Appropriate questions. Appropriate questions show care about the lives of others.
