Healthy Leadership

Leaders who desire to please everyone, in reality, end up attempting to please only those who matter least.

Leaders need wisdom to identify the people who aren’t good for them. A few qualities stand out: negativity, cynicism, malicious, deceptive, self-centered, and venomous are unhealthy for any relationship.

The ability to walk away rests upon knowing the value of one’s own mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health, and walking away takes courage.

The wisdom to know the people who aren’t good for us and the courage to walk away from them are steps toward a happier and healthier leadership.

Leading Personalities…Choleric

Most scholars recognize four basic personalities: Choleric, Sanguine, Melancholy and Phlegmatic. We can have all the classic traits of one or be a healthy or annoying combination. Knowing someone’s basic personality traits helps us better understand how to lead.

Someone who is Choleric is motivated to get things done even if they have to do it themselves. They struggle with delegating and can be hard to deal with, thinking they can do it better.

If mixed with another type they can warm up and be the best worker. Do we know anyone like this? Are we leading by helping someone be better at what they do?

Addicted to Improvement

Addiction is defined as a dependency on something, an inability to stop without incurring adverse effects.

Anthony J. D’Angelo once said, “Become addicted to constant and never-ending self-improvement.” Imagine what would happen if we all approached self-improvement with this thought.

Unhealthy addictions, from alcohol, drugs, food, electronic devices / internet, etc. destroy our life and influence.

However, healthy addictions help us improve our quality and quantity of life.

A few changes in the habits that form our daily routines make all the difference in developing an addiction “to constant and never-ending self-improvement.”
