This is not referring to the Central Intelligence Agency.

For our purposes, CIA stands for Consistency In Action. When leaders demonstrate consistency others have an example worth following.

Jesus constantly addressed the problem of inconsistency demonstrated by religious leaders. 

Among other areas, their inconsistency was seen in giving, prayer, and fasting. Their worship was worthless. Their lips moved in the right direction, but their heart went in the opposite direction. 

Jesus condemned them because their actions did not align with their teaching.

If we lead with CIA, our influence will reach greater heights.

Trust

What is the leader’s greatest asset? In leadership circles, the greatest asset is trust. If people lose trust in their leader, they will not follow, and without followers there is no leadership.

What can leaders do in order to establish a relationship of trust?

Demonstrate competence. Wisdom in decision-making and follow through helps leaders show a competence that followers need.

Eliminate inconsistencies. Learning to align our words and actions with our core values may not completely eliminate inconsistency, but it helps.

Cultivate character. While challenging, integrity is the foundation of our character upon which we cultivate trust.

We’ve all heard, “If you don’t like the weather, stick around. It will change in five minutes.” 

Inconsistency appears to be consistent when considering the weather. What about our leadership?

Do people see us one minute in perfect form and the next cold and stormy, leaving everyone wondering what they should do or say?

Often times, uncertainty exists among followers because inconsistency reigns among their leaders.

Leadership involves a process by which we learn to demonstrate the consistent qualities of godliness so followers know exactly what to expect.

When we do, the strength of our leadership will shape the lives of others with the same standard.
