An Elevator to Leadership

Imagine an elevator to the top of leadership? The mind and body would be less stressed. We would not have to go through the process of strategically putting one foot in front of the other, even when we are tired.

We may wish it worked this way, but it never has and never will.

Leaders are shaped by experiences throughout the journey. We learn invaluable lessons to help us deal with the various issues often encountered.

There are no quick and easy ways to the top of leadership. It takes work, and the more diligent we are, the greater our leadership.

P B and J

Growing up, I knew what was on the menu when mom said, “P B and J.” A peanut butter and jelly sandwich seemed to speak of a healthy lunch, the perfect combination of protein and carbohydrates.

From a leadership perspective, P B and J carries another important thought.

Promise: Leaders hold promise for a better tomorrow.

Belonging:
Leaders make it possible for others to belong, the security of a stable environment.

Journey:
Success is not about a destination, it is the journey. Make it rich.

The next time you hear P B and J, maybe you can remember the leadership connection.

A Destination Worth Reaching

How will we know when we reach the destination? The answer requires considerable thought.

To begin with, “Where are we headed?”

Our destination is based on the priorities that govern our lives, physically or spiritually.

Consider a few tips to guide us in the right direction.

First, remember there is more to life than food, clothing, and housing.
Second, we are easily blinded by only what we know empirically.
Third, time is a commodity we cannot afford to waste on the journey.

A few moments to answer the question based on these three thoughts can save a lifetime of frustration and failure.

Leadership Opportunities…

Opportunities are associated with choosing to walk the right path. These opportunities connect to short and long-term planning that help us achieve success.

One of the most important areas to consider involves the tools we carry to assist us in the journey.

Remove blinders. An awareness of our surroundings coupled with a willingness to help is vital.

Avoid distractions. Know the areas that create distractions and learn to avoid them.

Stay focused.
Staying focused on the right path reminds us of the purpose behind our walk.

A Question for Leaders…

How did we get here? We tend to ask this when…

…compromise results in consequences greater than expected.
…plans result in failure.
…chaos emerges within an organization.
…we are unprepared for tragedy.

When we find ourselves at a place we did not intend, desire, or plan for, we wonder, “How did I get here?”

Perhaps we need to ask, “What will we do now?”

The journey that brought us here is important, but it is more important to know what we do from this point.

As spiritual leaders, we must guide those who find themselves in difficult circumstances to a better place of hope.
