Happiness

What determines happiness? Dale Carnegie once said, “It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.”

Most people look for happiness in one of three areas: 1) what we do (happiness comes with success), 2) what we have (happiness comes with material possessions or money), and 3) what others say about us (happiness comes with image or status).

Happiness is rarely associated with “what we think.”

By leading with this mindset and helping others learn how to think on the right things, positive change is inevitable.

Excellence

Developing a mindset focused on the pursuit of excellence involves a couple of ideas.

Dedication: Any pursuit in life requires dedication, and this is true of excellence. The task is not easy, but worth it.

Take 5: Build a routine that sets aside five minutes everyday to focus on an area of excellence.

Read, read, read…listen, listen, listen: This one stands alone!

Rule of the last 10%: Too many get to 90% and coast to the finish line. Excellence requires finishing well.

Develop the habit: Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act. It is a habit.”

Competition

Our world is competitive. In nearly every area of life we find competition, from children to adults.

We see it in sports, politics, education, and religion. We become consumed with proving we are better than anyone and everyone else.

I once read an interesting quote, ”I am in competition with no one. I run my own race. I have no desire to play the game of being better than anyone, in any way, shape or form. I just aim to improve, to be better than I was before.” Unknown

Imagine the difference if leadership was built on this mindset, especially when coupled with the desire to help others improve.

A New Mindset

Leading others in the cause of Christ requires us to consider the way Paul approached the church in Philippi. In order for the church to have the mind of Christ (Phil. 2:5), they need to follow the example of Christ. Notice what Paul identifies.

1) We need to put the gospel of our Lord above ourselves.
2) We need to put our brothers and sisters above ourselves.
3) We need to put Christ above ourselves.

How powerful would the influence of the church be today, if we all possessed this attitude and practiced this mindset with each other?
