Power

Problems arise when leaders abuse power, or base their power on an inward self-centeredness.

Spiritual leadership must be built on the power of God.

When our leadership turns inward and self-centered, it will fail.

True leadership is about the power that comes from our God through His gracious and indescribable gift, Jesus.

He is the power to save, to make all things happen, and to lead.

Paul wrote “no man has the power to lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus the Christ” (1 Co. 3:11).

Let us pray for His guidance and direction in our leadership.

Family Leadership

There is still much we can learn from the family unit to help our spiritual leadership.

Families must be skilled in conflict resolution. No family is free from problems: financial, personality, health, communication, etc. How conflicts are resolved determines the success of the family.

Families must learn to cooperate. The idea of sharing one bathroom, rationing the food supply, and taking care of household chores, demands working together.

Families also need a common purpose. There will always be different personalities, opinions, objections, conflicts, and the list goes on. However, when families understand and strive for a common purpose, they are able to resolve problems, cooperate, and work together.

Catch 22 Leadership

Leaders often feel as if they are being shot at from both sides, in front and from behind.

How many times have leaders faced situations that no matter what decision was made they were condemned? We call this Catch 22 Leadership.

Leaders must be decisive, and they will always have to fight the enemy in front of them. However, they should not have to deal with attacks from followers behind them.

Pray with and for your leaders.
Always speak well of leaders to others.
Make it a habit to build them up publicly.
When a problem arises, speak to leaders privately.
Encourage those who are godly to lead.

Problems and Patience

All leaders face problems. Problems are not new, but how we deal with them makes a major difference.

James Merritt writes about the necessity of patience in leadership. He wrote, “Problems are not meant to defeat you, depress you, or discourage you. God meant them to develop you.”

If we possessed a more developmental mindset toward problems, we would probably experience an entirely different attitude when they occur.

When problems occur, regardless of the source of the problem, we have an opportunity to evaluate our approach.

The demonstration of patience in these moments may just give us an opportunity to experience divine development.

Preventing Emergencies

Recognizing problems in advance and preventing them from becoming emergencies both provide powerful benefits.

What can a leader do to recognize these problems in advance?

Accept that problems will happen. Living in denial, ignoring, or hoping a problem will go away is an invitation for an emergency.

Practice good communication. Many problems could be detected sooner if leaders listened more carefully.

Ask appropriate questions. At the first sign of a problem, learn to ask the right questions.

Learn from the past.
Lessons learned from previous experience are a foundation for the future.

There are no exact lists to resolve every problem in advance. However, these few will help.

Problems and Solutions

All leaders will face problems. How we deal with problems makes the difference.

I commonly hear people speak of moving from one fire (problem) to another. When one fire is out, they are racing to the next.

What will help with these problems before they become emergencies?

Address problems when they arise. Problems do not resolve themselves.

Rely on wise counsel
. Solomon teaches the value of wise counsel.

Learn to delegate. Get others involved in problem resolution.

Our task as spiritual leaders is to provide a solution from God’s word. Here, and only here, can real solutions be found.

Transparency

Transparency is a vital component to making things happen. A Forbes article identifies what happens when leaders are transparent.

  1. Problems are solved faster.
  2. Teams are built easier.
  3. Relationships grow authentically.
  4. People begin to promote trust in their leader.
  5. Higher levels of performance emerge.

Based on these five areas, transparency enables followers to understand and assist leadership in ways that move an organization forward to greater achievements.

How can leaders become more transparent in their leadership? Start with communication.

The time invested to produce a system of solid communication raises transparency and its benefits.

Solving Problems…

No one likes problems. We tend to shy away from a place where we must deal with them.

Colin Powell says, “Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.”

The thought of followers reaching a point where they do not bring their problems because they lose confidence or feel we do not care is frightening. Leaders should consider why problems come their way.

Learning how to resolve conflict and solve problems brings credibility to leadership.
