Timing is Everything

Timing is everything. How many times have we heard this statement or one similar? Yet, it is true on a number of levels.

When addressing a delicate situation, timing is everything.

When faced with life changing decisions, timing is everything.

When waiting for answers to test results, timing is everything.

When confronting a family member, fellow worker or employee, timing is everything.

God reminds us there is an appointed time for everything (Ecc. 3:1).

If we step back, think for a moment, and ask ourselves, “Is this the right time to continue in this direction?” maybe we can handle whatever life throws our way.

Timing is everything. How many times have you heard this statement or one similar? Yet, it is true on a number of levels.

Addressing a delicate situation.
Making life changing decisions.
Waiting for test results.
Confronting a family member, friend, or colleague.

God said, “There is an appointed time for everything, and there is a time for every event under heaven.” When we read Ecclesiastes 3:2-8 we learn quickly how true it is that timing is everything.

The next time a delicate situation arises, you are faced with making a decision, are awaiting test results, or considering how to confront someone else, remember – timing is everything.

Guidance

Guidance involves advice, counsel, direction, instruction, suggestions, and leadership.

Before guiding, consider the following.

1) Pray. Sounds easy enough, right? How many times do we stop and pray before we think through, type out, or talk about something?

2) Check the motive. Why do we want to advise someone? If the motive is not out of love and a desire to improve the other person, rethink.

3) Timing is everything. Do we understand the events that surround another person’s actions? Timing makes a difference in how we are received.

4) Encourage by affirmation. Critiquing someone’s decisions is received far better when we begin by affirming previous actions.

When leaders face decisions, it is critical to ask, “Is this the right time?”

Leaders have struggled with the results of making the right decision at the wrong time. The key is learning to make the right decision at the right time.

How do we learn this art?

Start with prayer. Consult the One who knows the past, present and future.

Counsel the wisdom of others. Seek advice from those who experienced similar decisions.

Admit wrong decisions. Never deny, ignore, or blame others for wrong decisions.

Timing can make or break a leader. Taking the right path improves our timing.
