Leadership Thought Of The Day…

“As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do.” Andrew Carnegie

One thing about leadership, everyone is watching. Children are watching. Our spouse is watching. Believe it or not, coworkers are watching. Neighbors, friends, extended family, the world; they are all watching.

Yes, they listen to what we say, but they watch what we do and then take a measurement. How does our leadership measure up?

Throughout the Old and New Testament, on various occasions, God was taking a measurement of the leaders of His people to show them how they were not measuring up to the standard He had given them. On one occasion they were not teaching truth to the people. On another occasion they were not living a life aligned with His word.

If God were to take a measurement of our leadership of His people today, how would we measure up?

Are we teaching truth? Are we living by the standard God has given us?

If not, while it is true others are watching us, remember God is also watching. Will we measure up?

What’s Up With The Weather?

For those who live in Colorado, you know exactly what I mean, and it may be the same wherever you live. The spring is always an interesting time of the year, one day we have sunshine and 75 – 80 degrees, and the next we have 25 degrees and 8 inches of snow.

As crazy as it may sound, this type of weather is fairly normal for the time of year. Inconsistency is about the only thing consistent. However, there is a comparison to our leadership.

Do people see us come in one day in perfect form, everything is excellent, and the next day cold and stormy, leaving everyone wondering how they should act, or what they should say?

Obviously, I cannot answer the question for you or anyone else. I mention this thought because it is not uncommon for there to be uncertainty among followers because of inconsistency among leaders.

Leadership involves a process by which we learn to demonstrate the consistent qualities of godliness so followers know exactly what to expect.

When we do, the strength of our leadership will shape the lives of others with the same standard.

Everyday’s A Holiday…

A friend of mine in Arkansas used to tell me this every time I asked how he was doing; “Everyday’s a holiday.”

I do not pretend to know, nor do I intend to explore, all this statement means or could mean, but I do want to think about the attitude behind it.

Life is about how we approach it. If we make up our mind to approach life with a negative attitude, then all we see will be through the lens of negativity.

However, if we choose to approach life with the “everyday’s a holiday” attitude, then what we see will be through the lens of positivity.

Biblically, this is the idea behind the word “blessed.” The quality of being blessed is one that cannot be affected by outside circumstances. There is an inner quality that exists regardless of the storms of life that may be blowing.

Whether we are poor in spirit, mourning, hungry, thirsty, or persecuted for the cause of Christ, we are blessed.

If we really look closely, we will also find that being blessed is a choice. Maybe everyday really is a holiday.

Leadership Word Of The Week…Goals

Goals are one of the most needed areas of leadership, yet one of the most overlooked and misunderstood.

Our approach to goals and goal setting if often an exercise in wishful thinking and generalities.

We consider goals much like our New Year’s Resolutions (for whatever they are worth).

The point I am trying to make is to consider that our goals need to be specific in nature. What are we seeking to achieve, exactly?

Goals should be measurable. How can we evaluate the progress in reaching our goals if they are not measurable?

Goals should be action oriented. In other words, goals involve us doing something.

Goals must be realistic. Remember there is a fine line between what we can do on our own and what we need God to help us achieve.

Goals should also be time-bound. If there is not a time factor involved in reaching the goal, it is just a wish.

As leaders, we need goals on a personal and congregational level; long term and short term. Success comes to those who set smart goals.

Prerequisite For Leadership…

If we were going to pick one prerequisite for leadership, what would we select?

Perhaps we would suggest the necessity of being a good communicator. There is no doubt, good leadership is built on good communication.

Maybe we would select the need for character. Again, character is not only a needed quality in leadership, we could say it is essential to being a good leader.

We might believe the best route is one of leadership ability. If there is something needed in leadership, we would all agree it is nearly impossible to lead without ability.

While I realize choosing one prerequisite for leadership can be subjective, I have learned over the years the prerequisite we need is a relationship with God.

Leaders will fail miserably when trying to go it alone.

Leaders will blindly falter when leading from a humanistic vantage.

Leaders will suffer needlessly when seeking guidance from worldly wisdom.

Only with the guidance, strength, and help of the Almighty God can we lead with the foundational prerequisite for successful leadership. See Joshua 1:1-9.

Leadership Thought Of The Day…

“What is right may not always be what is popular, and what is popular may not always be what is right.” Unknown

I first saw this thought when visiting a local office supply business in Arkansas.

God said it this way; “You shall not follow the masses in doing evil.” Exodus 23:2. He certainly understood the problems associated with following the majority.

Our children, in their early years, would frequently say, “Everyone is doing it.” I will never forget the first time I heard the thought that the only time in the history of humanity that everyone was doing it was in the Garden of Eden and it was called “sin.”

Simply because the majority may be involved in doing something, does not necessarily mean the minority should follow.

Christians will always be in the minority. Providing spiritual leadership among the minority will face its challenges, but it is necessary.

As we witness many congregations following the path of liberal tendencies, now is the time to stand up for what is right, even though it may not be popular.

Settling In For The Long Haul…

I have enjoyed running for a number of years. I am not a fast runner, but I enjoy feeling somewhat in good physical shape.

I have picked up on a number of lessons through reading and experience in my effort to be more of a distance runner.

The challenge most runners face is trying to go too fast too soon. The muscles become fatigued and the possibility of distance fades in the dust.

A second challenge runners face is the proper balance of fluids and fuel. Running burns a number of calories and without proper fuel, there is no energy. Dehydration can also prevent runners from really enjoying this exercise activity.

Granted, running may not be for everyone. Your choice may be something else, or nothing at all.

I have learned there are a number of lessons that parallel with leadership.

Trying to accomplish too much too quickly rarely creates a long lasting affect for leadership.

A proper balance of spiritual nutrition is vital for long lasting leadership.

Remember, leadership is never a sprint, it is always about settling in for the long haul.

Is It Really A Waste Of Time?

How many times have we heard someone say, “You are wasting your time.”

Perhaps we were establishing a plan for us personally or for our group, working on a project, or simply striving to get others actively involved.

As we give our energies, time and talent to achieve success, there is that little voice saying, “What you are doing is not making any difference. You are wasting your time.”

The list of “time wasters” could consume an entire week of posts and beyond. Life is filled with them.

However, leading is never a waste of time.

How can it be a waste of time when we are involved in leading someone to Christ?

How can it be a waste of time leading others to a greater life of faithfulness?

The number of “wasters” working to attack the use of our time will never end. The choice is ours in how we are going to deal with those events when they occur.

Always remember that leadership is never a waste of time for the one we are leading. Think Souls!

Leadership Word Of The Week…Yesterday

Last week we talked about tomorrow. I felt it was only fitting to follow up with yesterday.

I am aware we cannot live in the past, nor can we return to the past to change it in some way. If we all had a chance to live yesterday over I am sure there are some areas we would change.

Thinking about the events of yesterday provides a benefit to our leadership in several ways.

1) We can learn from the successes and failures of yesterday.

2) We can plan a better future based on the history of yesterday.

3) We can establish measures to prevent duplicating the mistakes of yesterday.

4) We can lead others on a straighter course based on yesterday.

5) We can find joy in the pleasures of a life well lived yesterday.

Feel free to add to the list of ways yesterday provides benefit to our leadership. I know we are all striving to survive the present with an anticipation of the future. However, we also need to stop on occasion and benefit from the past.

What Is Our Leadership Worth To…

I realize a number of directions can be taken when we leave an opened ended statement as the one above.

What is our leadership worth to our spouse? Children? Employees? Church? Us?

We could spend a series of posts in talking about the value or worth in each of these areas and it would be time well spent.

However, I want us to focus on the idea of worth.

Regardless of our position we need consider where we find value as leaders.

Sadly, most of us tend to find our value or worth in what we do. The value of what we are able to accomplish, the skills we possess, the praise others give us for a job well done, or a level of achievement seems to be what makes us feel like we have worth…value.

Nothing we do on this earth will have greater value or worth than fulfilling the God given roles we have as husbands and wives, mothers and fathers.

We need to spend more time within our families expressing to one another the value of leading as God would have us lead.
