Directional Leaders

Direction is the course taken to reach a destination.

What steps are needed to establish a consistent direction to reach our goals? Formulating steps provides direction for everyone involved in the project.

Do we, as leaders, know the direction necessary to accomplish the desired goal? If the answer is no, then we need to evaluate what we do and where we go.

Is the direction clear enough for others to understand and follow to reach the desired goal? Again, if the answer is no, then we need to think about communicating the direction more effectively.

Having direction is essential for reaching our destination.

The Finish Line

The idea of focusing on the finish line at the beginning of a race does not seem realistic.

Yet, the finish line is what we must have in mind. Without knowing where the finish line is and keeping it in full view, the following occurs:

1) The motivation to start and endure is eliminated.
2) Preparation suffers because there is no purpose.
3) Without a finish line, we have no direction.

Leaders have the incredible task of helping others see the finish line. When this is accomplished, people are motivated, they prepare, and they have direction.

A Destination Worth Reaching

How will we know when we reach the destination? The answer requires considerable thought.

To begin with, “Where are we headed?”

Our destination is based on the priorities that govern our lives, physically or spiritually.

Consider a few tips to guide us in the right direction.

First, remember there is more to life than food, clothing, and housing.
Second, we are easily blinded by only what we know empirically.
Third, time is a commodity we cannot afford to waste on the journey.

A few moments to answer the question based on these three thoughts can save a lifetime of frustration and failure.

Leading on the Right Track…

Will Rogers once said, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

Some people are on the wrong track, and whether they sit still or move in the same direction, if it is the wrong track there are consequences.

The implication involves movement and an intentional movement in the right direction.

Sitting still assures destruction, which is not an option.

Even if we are on the right track, immobility creates a negative impact on the morale of others.

Think about how this powerful thought impacts your leadership.

Reliance…

Spiritual leaders understand the need to rely upon God. They are reliant upon His guidance, direction, strength, and provisions.

Spiritual leaders are also aware of the fact that followers are also reliant upon them for the same.

Guidance provides advice and instruction in how to live.
Direction shows the way, primarily the way to heaven.
Strength is needed to keep moving toward the right goal.
Provisions are given to continue, even when all else fails.

These four areas are all directly related to our reliance upon God and leading His people. May our role never be taken lightly.

Directional Leaders…

I love the thought expressed by Nido Qubein, “Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.” 

We tend to do the opposite and let our present circumstances dictate the direction and the results are limited.

However, when our present circumstances merely provide a starting point, the possibilities become unlimited.

There is something interesting about the “will to want to” when achieving the plans we have established. 

Our circumstances simply furnish a starting point to move forward in achieving the desired goals.

Security in Leadership…

Security highlights several important factors that have a significant role in leadership.

When leaders provide a direction that does not give way, followers feel secure.
When leaders keep followers safe and unharmed, they feel secure.
When leaders protect followers from an enemy’s attack, they feel secure.
When leaders eliminate anxiety and fear, followers feel secure. 

For leaders to accomplish this type of security, they need to…

1) Be strong in faith.
2) Grow in knowledge of the word.
3) Trust in God.
4) Remember there is strength in numbers.
5) Lead with confidence.

Directionally Challenged Leaders…

The problem? “I have no idea where I am going.”

A directionally challenged leader will always struggle. If we do not know where we are going, how can we lead anyone there? 

When spiritual leaders are directionally challenged, we have an even greater problem. 

What can we do?

Set smart goals. Goals need to be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound.

Look to the finish line. Distractions abound and we can easily get off course. Focus on a goal.

Trust in the Word. Amidst the numerous voices vying to be heard, one is constant. Listen to it!

Be open to learn. Never stop learning and being open to learn.

Knowing where we are going eliminates most challenges.
