When

Leadership is a combination of many components that come together to help followers get from where they are to where they need to be and when they need to be there.

While these components will vary based on the people and situation, one of the most critical pieces to good leadership is knowing When.

Moving too slow causes frustration and moving too fast creates tension and anxiety. Like the story of the Three Bears, when we get it just right, everything works and moves to the benefit of everyone involved.

Finding Answers

When I observe my children and grandchildren, I understand the idea of looking for and awaiting answers related to trials experienced in life.

Fear, anxiety, and frustration can take control quickly. How can we eliminate these concerns and find the needed answers during such times?

Where do leaders go to find answers when adversity occurs, questions arise?

Leadership involves providing guidance, direction, encouragement, support, and knowing how to give answers to help others overcome their fears, anxiety and frustration. Where can a leader go to find the answers?

Pray.
Listen to God’s word.
Seek counsel.
Learn the value of trust.
Admit mistakes.
Never miss the opportunity to grow.

Leading Through Frustration

We all experience frustration. At times it is greater than other times. It is safe to assume that all of us desire to limit frustration to a minimum.

How we do so is the challenge. Here are a few suggestions:

1) Praying for help is not just a cliché.
2) Learn to accept frustration as part of life.
3) Realize that no one else thinks and acts as we do.
4) Talk with mentors we can vent to and seek counsel in our frustrations.
5) Learn from our frustrations.

These are five beginning points, but they will help minimize the frustrations of life.

Clear and Specific

Leaders need to stop “beating around the bush.” People want leaders to be clear and specific about direction. When this happens, leaders pay close attention to details, which promotes confidence in followers.

Vagueness breeds vagueness and frustration. When leaders are vague, the general mindset among followers is that leaders do not have a clue where they are going or to get there.

Establishing a system by which leaders communicate with clarity and specificity strengthens the morale of an organization and provides confidence in the direction.

The need is obvious. Now is the time for leaders to develop and implement a plan to be clear and specific.

A Destination Worth Reaching

How will we know when we reach the destination? The answer requires considerable thought.

To begin with, “Where are we headed?”

Our destination is based on the priorities that govern our lives, physically or spiritually.

Consider a few tips to guide us in the right direction.

First, remember there is more to life than food, clothing, and housing.
Second, we are easily blinded by only what we know empirically.
Third, time is a commodity we cannot afford to waste on the journey.

A few moments to answer the question based on these three thoughts can save a lifetime of frustration and failure.

Frustrated Leadership…

What is it that frustrates us the most? While the list is endless, here are a few possibilities. 

Incompetence?
Arrogance?
Hypocrisy?
Deception?

Do we get frustrated when we see any or all of the above?

Leadership is not unique when it comes to frustration. Followers get frustrated when they see leadership involved in any of these areas also.

John Maxwell is credited with saying, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” 

It begins with us as leaders to set the example, providing a standard to follow. We must demonstrate patience and understanding in gently leading others to this standard, not condemning or acting condescendingly concerning their actions.
