Leading with Character

Character is often the topic of posts. Consider the expression of character in the midst of this thought by Joey Potter.

“No matter where life takes you — big cities, small towns — you will inevitably run across small minds. People who think they are better than you, people who think that being pretty or popular automatically makes you a worthwhile human. None of these things matter as long as you have a strength of character, integrity… sense of pride. So when you meet someone for the first time, don’t judge them by their situation in life, because you never know, they may end up being your very best friend.”

Adding Value

What kind of value is needed to enhance our ability to lead?
How can we add the greatest value to our leadership?
Why does adding value mark the difference in long-term development?

The value needed to enhance our ability to lead involves respect. Value is added to our leadership over time and by demonstrating integrity during critical decisions.

The reason this value marks the difference in long-term development is because respect is elicited as a result of a leader’s abilities and achievements.

Respect is one value that when added to leadership changes the power of our leadership.

Integrity

How would you define integrity?

I’ve asked this question for several years and the responses vary to some degree. However, one primary definition remains constant, “Integrity is what you do when no one else is watching.”

The type of television shows and movies we watch, along with other activities we participate in when no one else is around speaks to our integrity.

No one can have stellar character publicly and trashy integrity privately without eventually suffering the consequences.

We develop character when we focus on our integrity, and this development begins with a self-examination of our moral compass.

The Essence of Leadership…

Essence is the intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of something––especially something abstract––that determines its character.

The idea raises questions and ideas.

What is the essence of our leadership? Is there any substance to our leadership?

David talks about one “who walks with integrity, works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart” (Ps. 15:2).

The idea behind walks, works, and speaks describes more than just actions. David is talking about who someone is on the inside.

Godly leaders know that character may be defined by their activities, but ultimately it is who they are on the inside that moves others to follow.

A True Leader…

Douglas MacArthur once said, “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.”

His thought exemplifies four key words that powerfully contribute to leadership.

Confidence – We need confidence in God and our leadership.

Courage – Leaders must demonstrate courage when needed.

Compassion – This Christlike quality should characterize all leaders. 

Equality – Acting with consistency is a key to equality.

Integrity – Few areas are more important than walking with integrity.

The Substance of Leadership…

Substance involves a quality of being important, valid, or significant. Simply stated, substance is the stuff that makes up leadership.

What makes up the substance of our leadership? Integrity? Work ethic? Core values?

What stands out that gives credibility to the substance of our leadership?

Only you and I can answer these questions. The substance of spiritual leadership must not be self-centered, but others-centered. The quality that validates the importance of leadership is not built upon “I,” but “you.” The substance of good leadership uses “we.”

As important and needed as leadership is today, it is worth our time to focus on the substance.

Truthful Leadership…

The opposite of truthfulness leads in one direction, deception.

Leaders are challenged to be honest enough with themselves to make the kind of decisions that demonstrate integrity.

Truthfulness will not allow us to be self-centered. As leaders, we can fall prey to justifying our actions and convincing ourselves something is true, when in reality it is false. This happens when we neglect to recognize our inward focus.

Leaders must be careful not to allow good intentions to vindicate pretentious actions.

Be truthful with self, others, and God in all areas.

Primal Leadership…

Primal comes from a Latin word meaning “first.” The idea relates to beginnings, first things, primary, essential, and foundational elements of all that is connected to life.

For leaders, it is essential to understand the primary / first elements that must be in place in order to achieve success.

These building blocks for spiritual leaders include integrity, honesty, strong work ethic, passion, confidence in God, discipline, and balance.

Additional elements may exist, but these are the “primal” ones of leadership.

When leaders build on this foundation, their strength of character provides hope for everyone who follows.

Confidence, Courage, Compassion – Integrity…

Confidence, courage, and compassion are three of the strongest words in leadership. Douglas MacArthur used these words in this thought, “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” 

The last thought powerfully establishes true spiritual leadership – integrity.

If leaders demonstrate the qualities identified and possess the integrity to stand behind them, their leadership will be stronger and point others to the God who gave them this position.

Responsible Leadership…

Leadership involves responsibility. The higher one goes in leadership, the greater the responsibility. Others have said, “The greater the responsibility, the fewer the rights.”

We live in a culture where taking responsibility is not always an acceptable practice. We also live in a culture where the common practice is one of blaming others.

The problem is not cultural. This practice has been around since the beginning with Adam and Eve. Leadership must seek responsibility and take responsibility for their actions.

When this kind of integrity exists, when leaders seek and take responsibility for their actions, their influence grows. The result? People will follow!
