True Success

In a world that believes we must win at all cost, the concept of losing is never considered. Even though several attempts to change this way of thinking are commercialized, the underlying mindset of success emphasizes the “W.”

From a spiritual perspective, however, true success is measured by the ideas expressed in losing our pride, fleshly desires, and sinful habits. When demonstrated in leadership, followers find an incredible example that reflects the true nature of Christianity.

In every culture, the ideas of winning and losing follow the same pattern. Therefore, we need leaders today who hold up the biblical standard of true success and victory.

Strong and Courageous

God emphasized strength and courage three times in Joshua chapter one, but only once did He use this specific phrase “strong and very courageous.”

The context of this one phrase has powerful implications in the realm of spiritual leadership. God specifies how Joshua’s success depends on following this advice.

Be careful to do
according to all the law.
Do not turn from it to the right or to the left.
This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth.
You shall meditate on it day and night.

What would it be like if spiritual leaders had the strength and courage to do the same today?

Enoch

Enoch “walked with God.” Just saying those three words should make our hearts and minds race.

Every spiritual leader needs to be characterized by their walk with God. How powerful would be if our eulogy were simply summed up as one who “walked with God?”

The beauty of Enoch’s walk with God is explained in the book of Hebrews. The conclusion is significant: Enoch’s walk with God was a life characterized by faith.

Hebrews 11 explains that a walk of faith is one of seeking God, obedience to His word, and trusting in His providence to help us receive what is promised.

Control

We often claim that someone needs to take control. We talk about people being controlling. We preach about self-control. We even discuss the need to be in control.

Why is it important for spiritual leadership?

When situations get out of hand, leaders must take control.
Spiritual leadership must not be controlling.
Leaders should be the epitome of self-control.
We look to these leaders when someone needs to be in control.

When leaders know how to use their power of influence in a Biblical and godly way, people’s behavior and the course of events can be shaped in ways to change eternity.

Balanced Godly Focus

A healthy physical and spiritual approach to life provides a benefit to extending life. The benefit of this extension on a spiritual level is eternal in nature.

Paul phrased it this way, “bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Ti. 4:8).

Developing the habits for a godly life require at least three necessities: 1) constant nourishment in healthy and balanced teaching, 2) avoiding a worldly focus, and 3) discipline in godliness.

Deliberate and Intentional

How many times have you procrastinated when making decisions? Your intentions were good because you were waiting for the “right time.”

This can happen when beginning a family, i.e. getting married or having children. We also see it in areas of career choices. I’ve heard, “If you don’t love what you do, then do something else. Life is too short to not enjoy what you do each day.”

Our lives should be deliberate and intentional. Once we choose the area we are most passionate about, then jump in. When we do what we love the most, joy finds a way into our lives.

Moses

God claimed Moses to be the meekest man on earth.

Recognizing his willingness to follow the advice of Jethro, preserving his mental and physical faculties, we find a great Bible leader.

However, Moses is an example of a great Bible leader because he started like most of us, denying God’s power to use him to lead His people. When Moses finally submitted himself to God’s authority and direction, we find Moses becoming what God needed.

He had flaws, required patience, and he had to learned that God must be treated as holy.

The lesson to learn is how God can use us with our flaws and imperfections.

Reflection and Correction

Maintaining good physical health does not come easy. We need strong determination and discipline in areas of physical activity and healthy eating habits. Maintaining good spiritual health requires the same determination and application of discipline.

People need to see the message as well as hear it. How do we make this alignment possible?

Reflection: Each night, look back over the day and consider conversations, actions, attitudes, etc. Do they reflect what we want as an example of Christianity?

Correction:
Do not make excuses, make changes. Each day is a new opportunity to start fresh and work on the areas of our conversations, actions, attitudes, etc.

Changing Self

Think about the implications of a thought expressed by Rumi, “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

Most people associated with spiritual leadership desire to change the world. However, an unending list of questions would need to be answered to even consider the task.

The idea of changing others cannot be achieved by compulsion or coercion. If change is achieved by such means the results will not last.

When we focus on changing ourselves we provide a living testimony for the world as to the benefits that come from implementing such change.

Leadership Download

Think about the concept of “downloading.” Literally, the idea is about transferring information from one source to another in an understandable format.

Downloading a virus can hinder, shut down, and/or destroy the function of your device.

Computers also download updates beneficial to the overall performance of the device.

Spiritual leaders know followers are constantly downloading information from them. Is the information hindering, shutting down, or destroying the function of their service? Are they providing information in an understandable, beneficial format? Does the information improve the overall performance of the individual or group?

Leaders make a difference. Make sure those who follow download the right material.
