Strong and Lasting Leadership

Our leadership must demonstrate a consistency in life according to what we believe and proclaim. Hypocrisy destroys leadership more quickly than anything else.

The invariability of leading without fail and without exception is critical to the success of strong leadership. No matter what the cost, invariably, leaders will show up.

Followers need leaders with stability. Stability provides followers with security.

Regularity demonstrates a leadership that is fixed, unchanging, and unvarying. When others can count on their leader, they will follow them anywhere.

When we practice these qualities our leadership grows stronger and lasts longer.

Strong and Courageous

God emphasized strength and courage three times in Joshua chapter one, but only once did He use this specific phrase “strong and very courageous.”

The context of this one phrase has powerful implications in the realm of spiritual leadership. God specifies how Joshua’s success depends on following this advice.

Be careful to do according to all the law.
Do not turn from it to the right or to the left.
This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth.
You shall meditate on it day and night.

What would it be like if spiritual leaders had the strength and courage to do the same today?

Timeless Advice

We all enjoy learning timeless nuggets of advice, those pieces of information unaltered by time, generation, or culture. Often times, we can overlook them for something believed to have greater value.

Joshua was given one of these nuggets, “Be strong and very courageous.” God emphasized strength and courage three times in this context.

As we consider the timeless nature of this advice, there are powerful implications for spiritual leaders. God specifies that Joshua’s success depended on following this advice.

The success of our leadership today depends on following the same. How different would our world be if spiritual leaders had the strength and courage to do so?

Strength applies to physical, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual areas of life.

Challenges occur when our strength declines, especially in the spiritual realm.

Perhaps we have seen or experienced personal struggles to remain spiritually strong and faithful.

During these times, Paul encourages Christians to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God” (Ep. 6:10-11).

Each piece of armor reveals a close relationship to God’s word. Our strength comes from what God provides us through His word.

His word helps us find the strength to lead others to our Lord.

Leaders will always encounter times of discouragement, but how do we survive and grow stronger?

Here a few suggestions to consider.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed.
Focus on one area at a time.
Learn the value of knowing when to walk away.
Seek counsel with other survivors.
Remember to seek the good in all situations.

Leaders cannot avoid, ignore, or ever neglect adversity. Instead, learn how to survive the fallout when adversity exists and become a stronger leader.
