At its core, leadership involves the type of influence that makes a difference in the lives of others. As we go through our day, can we be that one? Can we be the one who influences others with a smile, a hand, word, or touch?

The answer is yes! Lead this way!

I first saw this question on a church building sign.

The question challenges the depth of our faith and the strength of our vision.

The question requires a deep reflection into our soul to determine where we are and where we want to go.

The question brings a responsibility to act, requiring us to get up and do something.

The question applies to every individual and congregation. It stretches across every generation, culture, and era.

Before you read the question, remember to give serious consideration to the question before answering.

The question is simply this: “What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?”

A Leadership Gift

People tend to enjoy receiving gifts. Usually, we appreciate the intent more than the price. I like the way Paul said it, “I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls.”

Paul was willing to give of himself in every way if it benefited others. Specifically, he desired their salvation.

In a self-serving world, it is challenging to find leaders who desire more to give than receive. As spiritual leaders, we focus on giving ourselves so others might be saved.

Our prayer should be to see the ways we can spend and be spent in the Lord’s service.

Global Leadership

The world’s population is beyond my comprehension. When I consider eight billion people, it simply becomes a number.

As I travel, the reality of this number becomes even more incredible. I think about…

The plethora of languages.
My inability to communicate adequately.
The brief time I spend in each location.
How do all of these people come to know Christ?
Their soul.
What can and needs to be done?

I have more questions than answers.

I am thankful for the dedication and willingness of mission minded leaders who have and continue to lead on a soil different than their own.

Improving Our Leadership

Leaders must continually strive to improve. Although the author is unknown, the following thought is powerful, “The day you stop getting better is the day you better quit.”

We point to this idea frequently, but it cannot be overstated. We all need to constantly work at improvement.

Leading in the home requires more attention to provide the right foundation.

Leading at work provides direction for the success of the organization.

Leading in the church is essential to uphold truth, save souls, strengthen faith, and sustain generational leadership.

We must pursue, with fervor, the improvement of who we are and what we do as leaders.

A Healing Leader…

A thought expressed by a good friend is worth sharing. 

“I find a leadership lesson in the experience of helping the church heal. Leaders cannot allow themselves to see people as groups, as factions; we must see them individually. As leaders, we may preach to a congregation, but we teach one soul at a time. For, we never know which one might become the next leader.” Paul Myers

Read the last line again and let it sink in for a moment. We may proclaim the word of God to multitudes, but leadership is developed through transforming one soul at a time.

The Human Soul…

Ralph Peters said, “The great paradox of the 21st century is that, in this age of powerful technology, the biggest problems we face internationally are problems of the human soul.”

I do not pretend to understand the big problems of the 21st century, technologically or otherwise. However, spiritual leadership does involve the human soul.

No problem of the human soul can be addressed apart from Jesus. The challenge is to seek, find, and know Him.

The problems of the human soul are not solved with worldly philosophy and the wisdom of men.

The power and wisdom of God, Jesus, make the difference.
